What Is a Commodity Code?

A commodity code (also called an HS code or tariff code) is an 8- or 10-digit number that classifies your product for customs purposes. It determines:

How to Find Your Commodity Code

Step 1: Use the GOV.UK Trade Tariff

  1. Go to the GOV.UK Trade Tariff.
  2. Search by product name (e.g. “stainless steel water bottle”).
  3. Browse the classification tree.
  4. Note the 8-digit code and check the duty rate.
