Container shipping lines operate vessels. Freight forwarders arrange the wider journey around those vessels. For many UK SMEs, that difference determines whether the quote covers only port-to-port transport or the complete shipment.
Why going direct is not always the best fit
Major carriers are designed to sell vessel capacity. Some now offer digital bookings to smaller shippers, but an importer still needs to understand origin handling, export formalities, UK customs, port charges and final delivery.
For small volumes, the bigger issue is consolidation: if you only have a few pallets, you normally need LCL container shipping rather than a whole box.
What a freight forwarder adds

FCL and LCL explained
FCL (Full Container Load) gives one shipper the whole container. LCL (Less than Container Load) combines several shippers' cargo in one container and charges each customer for the space used. The right choice depends on volume, density, handling sensitivity, timing and current market rates.
For most lanes, LCL is attractive for smaller consignments, while FCL becomes more economical as volume approaches a significant share of a container.
Example: importing furniture from China
A furniture importer may use FCL when the order fills most of a container. Carrgo can arrange the origin movement, carrier booking, sea freight, UK customs release and delivery to the warehouse. If the order is much smaller, the same lane can be handled as LCL so the importer does not pay for unused container space.

Large shippers moving consistent weekly container volumes may negotiate directly with shipping lines. Even then, many still use forwarders or brokers for customs, origin coordination and inland transport.
