What Is an EORI Number?

An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is a unique ID assigned to businesses and individuals who import or export goods into or out of the UK.

If you're bringing stock into the UK from China, the EU, the USA or anywhere else, you need an EORI number to clear customs.

A UK EORI number starts with GB followed by a 12-digit number (based on your VAT number, if you have one). If you're based in Northern Ireland, you may also need an XI EORI number for EU trade.

How to Apply for a UK EORI Number

Online (fastest):

  1. Go to the GOV.UK EORI registration page.
  2. Have ready:
    • Your VAT number (if registered)
    • Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
    • Business start date and Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code
    • National Insurance number (if you're a sole trader)
  3. Complete the online form.
  4. Receive your EORI number by email — usually within 48 hours, sometimes same day.

By post: Print and post form C220 — takes up to 5 working days.
